A Treasury for Mélodie
This site is being set up by Christopher Goldsack to help those interested in classical French Song to approach the repertoire. Any student, singer or listener is welcome to use the site. In the very long term I hope to have a much more detailed index - by poet, by year of composition, by voice etc. One day I might also add biographical details of poets etc. In the meantime the bulk of the site is a set of translations of songtexts which I have written to be as helpful as possible - they are not meant to be literary creations but literal translations, sticking to the spirit of the original as closely as possible. There are many more to do! In the meantime, if you need any particular song send me an email and I will have it posted as soon as possible. I would be grateful if anybody wishing to use them in concert programmes would first ask me. Also, I have done my best to ensure accuracy and error-free typing. I connot proof-read the whole lot, so if anybody comes across errors, do please let me know. If anybody wants to contribute ideas and translations, by all means offer as well. Thank you....
Here are a few files that may be of interest...
Who am I? I am an English singer who enjoys recital work and who has had a particular interest in French Mélodie. I have worked extensively in France and won several major international singing competitions there, presenting mainly French repertoire. I teach extensively and have worked in the London conservatoires, and enjoy coaching this repertoire, and am therefore encouraged to make these translations available to others. I wrote them with the aim of familiarising myself with as much of the repertoire as possible while I was a student myself.
I also perform with mezzo-soprano Janet Shell and pianist John Flinders in an ensemble called Promenade. Follow the below to visit our joint home page.
